Inviron has been appointed by Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries (H&W) to install HVAC equipment for two substations on one of the world's largest offshore wind farms, Gwynt y Môr.

Due for completion in February 2014, Gwynt y Môr, meaning ‘wind in the sea' in Welsh, is currently being developed 13 kilometres off the north Wales coast by a consortium of RWE Innogy, SWM - Municipal Utility Munich, Germany and Siemens.

John Vickers, Inviron general manager, commented: "We are very pleased to have been awarded this major contract by Harland and Wolff.  Inviron will design, supply and install the air conditioning systems that will serve the equipment rooms and the temporary living quarters on both substations. 

"Onboard the H&W platforms Siemens' equipment will transform the power from 33kV up to 132kV for transmission back to a new onshore substation at St Asaph.  The unmanned substations are monitored remotely and the HVAC installation incorporates a high degree of component duplication, controls and systems."

Powered by the high speed winds in Liverpool Bay, Gwynt y Môr's 160 turbines will have the capacity to generate enough electricity to supply around 400,000 households when they become operational in 2014.
