The Bluecoat

Inviron, the leading building services and facilities management provider, is proud of the role it played, installing the mechanical systems, to create Liverpool's recently opened, contemporary arts centre, the Bluecoat.

During the £12.5m project, Inviron's Building Systems North West, worked in partnership with main contractor, Kier North West, to refurbish and install the mechanical services into both the existing Grade I Listed building and newly built facilities, such as the galleries.

These services included:

  • Heating - A new central heating boiler room houses various items of plant including two gas-fired twin-unit modular boilers, duty/standby pumps and a pressurisation unit which serve the entire Arts Centre.

  • Ventilation and Cooling - Each of the new galleries has fresh air pumped in via an air-handling unit. The system ensures a comfortable environment for staff and visitors by depositing fresh, cooled air into the galleries drawn via ductwork from louvres in the roof level.

  • Above Ground Soil and Waste Services - The existing cast iron soil and waste system was modified and extended whilst modern pipework was installed to cater for the layout of the new toilet facilities.

As a result of the extensive work by Inviron and Kier North West, the Bluecoat, which was constructed in 1717, has been transformed into a cultural, business and retail complex, which is set to become a brand new icon for Liverpool in its European Capital of Culture year.

Jason Hanson, Inviron's project manager, said: "It's very satisfying to know that we have helped create an iconic building and played an important part in Liverpool's Capital of Culture status. We recently discovered the Bluecoat was one of the first places in the UK to exhibit the works of Picasso, so hope it helps more ‘up and coming' artists achieve fame."
