The new Westgate Plaza building in Barnsley now boasts environmentally friendly technologies thanks to Inviron, the leading building services and facilities management provider.
Inviron's Building Systems Manchester business has delivered a fully tested and commissioned mechanical and electrical (M&E) design and build package for Phase 1 of the new development in the Westgate area of Barnsley.
Part of this contract involved overseeing the installation of an environmentally friendly bio-mass boiler, which works by burning either wood pellets or chips stored in a purpose made fuel storage bunker.
The fuel is transferred from the bunker to the boiler by means of an auger and all the ash produced from the burnt wood is collected in a purpose made container.
The main benefits of the bio-mass boiler are the dramatic cuts in carbon dioxide emissions, which are virtually zero compared to a traditional gas fired system, and savings in energy costs.
As well as this boiler, Inviron has also installed a rainwater recovery system, which collects water for the flushing of all toilets within the development, thereby saving water usage.
The system works by the rainwater being collected on the roof and distributed via a syphonic guttering system that discharges it into a 30,000-litre storage tank. From here it is distributed throughout the building to supply all the toilets.
Inviron successfully completed the base build installation and as a result was appointed to carry out the extensive remodelling works required to present the client with this impressive facility.
The full contract included, mechanical works; LPHW heating, domestic hot water, potable boosted water, natural gas services, ventilation, comfort cooling, above ground drainage, BMS system.
The electrical works involved power and lighting, CCTV & access control, lightning protection, fire alarm, intruder alarm, IT, data and WIFI, earthing and bonding and external barriers while the specialist work included the bio mass boiler, rain water recovery and lighting control system.
