Building Schools for the Future

Leading building services and facilities management provider, Inviron, is supporting three Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiatives in the North East of England.

Working alongside main contractor Carillion, Inviron are currently installing mechanical and electrical systems at Heworth Grange School and Thomas Hepburn Community School, both in Gateshead, and at Harton Primary School in South Shields. The projects are a collaboration between South Tyneside and Gateshead Local Authorities, Carillion's Inspired Spaces, and the three schools.

As with all BSF initiatives, their impact on the environment is high on the agenda, so each school will benefit from the latest green technologies. All three will have biomass boilers, while a Passivent natural ventilation solution will be installed at Harton Primary School. Additional energy saving systems to be installed comprise of condensing boiler plant, individually controlled and timed underfloor heating, a small storage high recovery hot water system, and intelligent and PIR controlled lighting.

Alan Crozier, Inviron's general manager, comments: "These are exciting and innovative projects although there will be some challenges, particularly at Heworth Grange, where the main teaching building is being demolished to make room for the final building phases. This part of the project started during this year's school summer holidays, to minimise disruption for pupils and staff, and will continue next summer."
